"Cinderella Surgery" Rising in Popularity

Tummy tucks and nose jobs are among the most popular surgeries in the United States, but there's another cosmetic procedure whose popularity is rising - the "Cinderella" surgery.

According to the New York Times, a growing trend among wealthy US women involves altering the shape or size of their feet to fit more easily into designer shoes.

Women are getting their toes lengthened or shortened, their bunions removed, and the bottoms of their feet injected with fat (as a sort of soft insert) just to slip more easily into "peep-toe" footwear.

One woman asked a surgeon to amputate her little toes (though he refused) so she could wear designer shoes. Another patient asked her podiatrist for toe liposuction.

According to the New York Times, women are getting Cinderella surgeries more and more often.

Reshaping a foot to fit in expensive heels is certainly an extreme form of cosmetic surgery, but it's not the only unusual cosmetic surgery trend that's on the rise. In South Korea, the "smile lift" surgery (which involves creating the apperance of a permanent smile) is becoming ever more popular.

Presently, there is a growing number of medical doctors who are entering the world of aesthetic medicine. Changes in the healthcare laws have affected physican reimbursements across the board and new regulations have made it more difficult and expensive for doctors to receive financial compensation. Many of the latest non invasive cosmetic procedures require a minimal amount of skill or education to use. The results of these procedures are often disappointing and at time disfiguring.
