Plastic Surgery and Skin Care
The aging process is not very nice!
Genetics, sun exposure, tobacco use, even the remodeling of the facial bones as we age, each contribute to our appearance as we mature. One area of the face which is affected by aging that many of my clients absolutely do not like, is the fold that develops extending from the side of the nose (Latin-naso) toward the corner of the lips (Latin-labial). This is called the nasolabial fold.
The nasolabial fold is a normal anatomical structure composed of both muscle and dense nonelastic supportive tissues. As the skin over our cheek bone loses its fullness and elasticity, it begins to sag creating a ledge over the nasolabial fold. The fold then deepens and becomes more prominent. As we continue to age, the nasolabial fold may extend even further down our face toward our jawline. In an effort to soften the appearance of the fold, a filler is commonly injected into the fold in an attempt to "plump it up". The result is a ropey, plastic appearance that takes away the natural movement of the skin around the mouth.
So what is the answer?
Well, like any problem, before you can fix the problem you must first have a clear understanding of what has caused it and then have the knowledge and experience to repair it. The problem is not the nasolabial fold. Remember, the fold is just part of your anatomy. The issue is sagging of the soft tissue above the fold. The non surgical solution is to restore the youthful volume to the cheeks and in doing so, the sagging skin which created deepening of the fold is lifted. The cheeks now appear more youthful and the nasolabial fold is no longer a distraction. To bring volume to the cheeks I use a hyaluronic acid filler called Juvederm Voluma. Unlike fillers that last less than a year, clinical studies have found the beneficial effects of Voluma to last up to two years. In order to achieve natural results that don't appear overdone, it is very important that Voluma be placed at the correct depth. Knowledge and familiarity of the facial anatomy is absolutely necessary to make this an effective and safe procedure. As many of you know, my background in plastic surgery includes craniofacial reconstructive surgery so this is an area that I am very familiar.
We have been offering Juvederm Voluma in our practice for several months and I believe it is a wonderful product which many of our clients have benefitted from! The procedure is performed in our office and there is no downtime. So now it’s your turn to reduce the appearance of your nasolabial folds and attain cheeks that are gently fuller and definitely more youthful in their appearance!
