Seeing Spots?- How to Prevent and Treat Hyperpigmentation
Sun spots, also knowns as hyperpigmentation, can form for multiple reasons. Genetics, UV ray exposure, and PIH (post inflammatory hyperpigmentation) are most often the culprit of an uneven complexion and spotting.
So how do you prevent sun spots from showing up on your skin?
1. Wear a Broad Spectrum Sunscreen daily.
One of our most popular sunscreens is Obagi SunShield Matte SPF 50. It is the strongest sun protection available from Obagi and it provides a sheer matte finish-something not always found in a 50 SPF. It is broad spectrum meaning it will protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays; a must have!
2. Stay in the shade when possible.
I understand summer is on its way which means most of you will be enjoying outdoor activities that may not always offer a shade tree to hide under. Wearing protective sunglasses, a stylish hat, and even sun-protective clothing (look for UVP, ultraviolet protection rating, on the label) will offer extra protection when you are unable to find a shaded area while outdoors.
3. Be cautious of high UV radiation levels.
UV radiation is at its highest from the hours of 10 AM to 4 PM. Make sure to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours when enjoying the warm weather during these peak hours of UV ray exposure.
Prevention from excess sunlight is one approach to freeing your skin from spots- but what if you already suffer from hyperpigmentation?
As stated earlier, hyperpigmentation of the skin can also be caused by factors other than sun exposure. In some cases it is genetics; your grandmother has hyperpigmentation, your mom has hyperpigmentation, and now you are seeing spots too! Fluctuations in female hormones during pregnancy could also be a potential cause of skin hyperpigmentation. Or maybe you suffered from acne as a teen and are left with dark pigmented scarring.
No matter the cause, the answer to treating hyperpigmentation begins with Hydroquinone 4%. Hydroquinone 4% is a prescription strength skin lightening product that is topically applied to address hyperpigmentation. It works by controlling the melanocytes within our skin which distribute melanin ( the pigament responsible for the color of our skin) while also lightening the spots visible on the skin's surface.
Obagi offers many products with prescription strength HQ 4%, but the most popular in addressing stubborn hyperpigmentation is called Blender. Blender is applied only at night and is mixed (or blended ) with a product called Retin A to maximize the potential for skin lightening. Although Blender is a skin lightener, or bleaching agent, it will never lighten your skin beyond your its natural color.
