Plastic Surgeons See a Rise in "Selfie" Surgery

Selfies are everywhere; in fact, the Oxford English Dictionary has named "selfie" the word of the year. From teenagers to celebrities, it's all about having the closeup.

Jan Balistreri feels much younger than her age - 67 - and doesn't take a lot of selfies, but her grandson does.

"I think it's a fun thing, but it's hard to look good on a selfie," says Jan.

She admits to feeling a little self conscious about the selfies her grandson took with her. "You think, 'oh this is fun' until you look at them and say 'Huh! I really am a grandma!'"

Jan is not alone. Dr. Mark Blake, a plastic surgeon in Arizona, says more and more people are coming in for what is now termed "selfie surgery".

"They see something on that photo that is concerning to them, bothering them, or something they want to see different," says Blake.

According to a new study, the rise of "selfies" is having a large impact on the plastic surgery industry. 30% of people that come on for surgery based on the way a selfie made them look.

Dr. Blake feels a strong responsibility to make sure people stay true to who they are, especially when they are dealing with "selfie" plastic surgery.
